Hi, my name is Travis Neilson.

If you have dug this far into my website and you have actually committed yourself to reading my 'about' page; you must be either extremely bored or extremely interested in working with me to creatively find a solution to your communication needs. Either way, I am going to take the opportunity to give you a few bits of information about myself and my qualifications. Its gonna be fun so keep reading!
A little about meI am a twenty-five year old resident of Las Vegas and have been invested in the world of graphic arts since I was fifteen or so when I started to notice good design all around me. I saw it in the magazines I read, on the television shows I watched (I took in a lot of Mtv when I was a kid), and in the layouts of the albums I collected of my favorite bands.
Understanding the beauty of a well designed product, I couldn t help but desire to create something myself.
Believe it or not, I was a member of a rock band in high school. (I know, right?) And therefore associated with creative people who had needs for shirts, flyers, posters, websites and everything that super rockin' rock bands need. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot back then.
It's been years now and, sadly, my super rockin' rockband has broken up. I, however, have not lost the passion for graphic design that spawned in my youth. Now, much more experienced and talented, I seek to make other people look good through well designed products.
ExperienceI have had experience with many different mediums, which is a healthy thing for a designer. Those early days in the music circles taught me a lot about low-budget D.I.Y. projects. Silk screen printing, flyer and poster design, 'zine' design and publication, and album packaging were all on the to do list; and I did it all. It was all about experimentation and learning back then, and those are some of the fondest design lessons I have had. Sadly, I had no idea that I could do these type of things for a living so I would tend not to keep anything for my portfolio. Stupid, I know.
In my first year of college I decided to abandon my degree in Education and study Graphic Design. It was a more natural choice for me, and even though I love teaching and helping others become better people I have a greater passion for art and design. There really is nothing like stepping back to view a finished piece and having that complete sense of accomplishment. Its brilliant. I love that.
I now have a proper education and a degree in graphic arts with an emphasis in print design. Nice huh? I still learn more with each project I do, my education is never over.
SkillsNot only have I refined my skills over the years but my tools have been upgraded also. (I swear that the copy machine room in my high school was my second home.) I am versed in Adobe's Creative Suite. My strengths are in Photoshop and Illustrator, but of course I am very comfortable and can work very well in InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, and the output of the content created in those applications. I also have a thorough knowledge of HTML and CSS and can write both by hand.
Having a technical knowledge of all these applications and languages is a big help in my line of work, but all of that would be useless without a comprehension of basic and fundamental design principals. I have studied in depth these principals and make a conscious effort to incorporate them into my work. I understand the principals involved with layout such as emphasis, contrast, symmetry, rhythm, and use of grid and proper typography.
ServicesThe services that I can provide are wide and ranging. As I said before, I have an emphasis in print design. I enjoy creating promotional materials such as: identities and logos, business cards, stationary, postcards, flyers, posters, invitations, magazines, packaging, billboards, stickers, clothing, and whatever else is necessary to communicate the message you have to share.
Though I have studied printing processes in depth, I am also competent in new media design such as: web design including html email, blog design, and interface design. Also flash design with application on the web, dvd, presentations, and banner advertisements. The possibilities are endless, if you have a need to communicate we can find the appropriate solution together.
I have a few extraordinary passions; project genres that make my mouth water and keep me up at night with excitement. I love magazine design, I feel it to be one of the most expressive and intricate mediums. Having a background in music and band promotional design, I maintain an affinity to CD packaging and poster design. I have been told that posters are one of the only graphic design genres that can be considered fine art. I don't know about all that but I sure do love a large format print with solid impact and good style. Closely associated with that, I like making desktop wallpapers and osx icons. I get a buzz on a good interface design too. Yeah, I'm kind of a nerd, but in a good way.
Method
Good, effective design is communicative in nature. There must be a message to each piece or else its just art (but thats another discussion.) Therefore, it becomes the first step in my design process to understand and clearly define the message my client wishes to convey. Once the message has been defined, it becomes my goal to understand the target audience- the people who will be receiving the communication.
Its important to understand the way this audience communicates with each other and the world, for example; how a teenage audience would receive an advertisement for a website compared to a country club invitation for more established and mature members. Every audience has a mode of communication and its important to research and find the most effective method to reach them.At that point, and all along the way I am making sketches and thumbnails in my notebook. It doesn t usually take long to stumble upon something that starts to speak to me as an intelligent solution to the communication need. I develop these ideas a little further and present them to the client for initial approval. I feel its important to keep the client involved in the process as much as possible and I believe the most important part of the entire project is the client/designer relationship. Open communication is had throughout the development process and the client is never surprised by anything when the final product is delivered. I have many clients who feel that this open policy is the main reason they use my services.
Now I'd like to hear from you. Do you have a project in mind for us to work on together? Do you think your business or product could benefit from a little expert help? I am very eager to hear from you and begin a profitable and efficacious relationship.
